Fun Size (PG-13) F

Fun Size (PG-13) F

Being a film critic I do see a lot of bad movies. But "Fun Size" is not only bad, this film is WRONG - on so many levels: The film-making is poor, it's shockingly unfunny and the performances are completely forgettable. But all of that takes a backseat to some much bigger problems, the main one being that this is a PG-13 supposed comedy whose main character is an 8-year-old boy who is ignored by his mother, his older sister allows him to wander away and get lost while Trick-or-Treating and then he goes through a series of "adventures" that include being physically abducted by strangers several times and then finally kidnapped and locked in a room.

Oh, and did I forget to include that this kid's father recently died and he hasn't spoken since? Can you think of anything funnier to base a Halloween teen comedy on?

I'm not going to bother doing a synopsis of "Fun Size". The script doesn't deserve one. The main question is: how the people at Nickelodeon, who are so careful with their brand and their reputation for descent, family shows, could have given their blessing to this mess? This is Nick's first PG-13 movie in the U.S. and it features one of the network's biggest stars - Victoria Justice ("Victorious"). I've never seen that show but the basic plot of "Fun Size" - the Justice character and her best friend (Jane Levy" from TV's "Suburgatory") trying to get to the big Halloween party so she can meet-up with the school hunk who really likes her, could have been taken from that show or any generic teen sitcom. But in an effort to attract an older audience, the makers of "Fun Size" add bathroom humor (literally), sex, adult language, underage drinking, a gunfight and anything else they could think of - including some incredibly inappropriate scenes involving Chelsea Handler, who plays the mom and tries to get laughs out of breast cancer and her husband's death.

"Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville is also part of the supporting cast but his name is left off the credits. You know things are bad when one of the guys from "Jackass" is too embarrassed to be associated with a film.

The only positive thing I can say about "Fun Size" is that it's one of the shorter films of the year. But having sat through it, trust me, it seemed like the longest 80 or so minutes of my life.

Once again (and I'm repeating this for parents who are seeing the commercials for this movie all over TV, mostly during children's programs) "Fun Size" is rated PG-13 for sexual content, mature themes, crude humor, adult situations and language. It's aimed at teens and Victoria Justice fans - but if you are the first and want to remain the second - avoid this movie at all cost. And that goes for everybody else.

On The Official LCJ Report Card, "Fun Size" gets an F. It's the WORST film of 2012.
